Located next to the beautiful Lorenzi Park, the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society is full of information related to the history of the state. For a small amount of money, free for children and only $4 per adult, a person can get a better look at the true history of Nevada. Most people do not realize that there is more to Nevada and the city of Las Vegas than just the “Mob” stories that have been over played in movies and on television.
Long before and after Bugsy Siegel and the “Flamingo” there is a rich history of prehistoric dimensions. This museum covers every era starting with the dinosaurs and ending with the mega resorts that have made it the popular tourist attraction it is today. You can walk under the skeletal remains of a mammoth with ten foot tusks and view all the different types of wildlife that roamed the state then and now.
Visitors are given the opportunity to learn of the difficult times of the courageous Sarah Winnemucca and the Paiute Tribe as they watched more and more people of European descent move in and take over the land that had kept them for thousands of years.
There is a rich military history in Nevada unmatched by any other state. From the Nevada Test Site where the Atomic Bomb was tested to the WWII training of bomber pilots and gunners, this museum covers it all.
This museum pays special attention to all these points in history and every other point along the way. It is the ideal place for locals to learn about the history of their everyday surroundings and a great place for tourists to find that there is more to this beautiful state than the glowing neon lights that shine bright on “The Strip.”
