Here we all are, riding the sugar rush that is halloween. We will ride that straight into Thanksgiving where we'll catch a quick tryptophan/football nap, then off we'll be into more sugar crazed shopping, celebrating, and eating right until our New Year resolution to eat right and exercise.
What if we do it differently this year? What if we look around down our own streets, in our own neighborhoods and notice our friends, families, and fellow humans that don't feel the bloat of excess or the crash of sugar? There are so many with so little. What if you buy one less gift for the family you celebrate with, and buy one hat for a child with cold ears?
Let us extend a hand and our hearts to those not looking forward to this season. A great place to start is United Way of Pierce County and United Way of King County. (www.uwpc.org, www.uwkc.org) You can also find great opportunies at www.volunteermatch.org. Let's get children involved also; they will get more out of giving to people in need than in opening a mountain of gifts of excess. The pride we will feel at seeing them participate in our community will outshine all wrapping papers and bows.
Let's make this a warm, safe, merry and bright holiday for all. May you find happiness and cheer this holiday season.
