The hearing began Monday for Aurora theater shooter, James Holmes (Video)

The preliminary hearing for James Holmes, the Aurora theater shooter, began on Monday, January 7, 2013. The hearing is expected to go on all week. Today’s hearing has already proven to entail very emotionally-charged testimony as the officers recount what they saw when they arrived at the theater on July 20, 2012.

CBS has the details:

"There was so much blood on the floor, Officer Justin Grizzle said he slipped and almost fell down."

Although no cameras are allowed in the courtroom, James Holmes is said to have brown, not orange hair, and a full beard. You can view the attached slideshow to see some photographs of the shooter and some of the locations involved, such as the movie theater.

One of the interesting details released in today’s hearing is that James Holmes purchased his theater ticket 12 days before the actual shooting, according to ABC News. It is expected that many other interesting and previously unknown details will come out during this week’s hearing. The details in the case were sealed three days after the shooting.

ABC News reports:

Officer Jason Oviatt said he first thought Holmes was a cop because he was wearing a gas mask and helmet, but as he got closer realized he was not an officer and held Holmes at gunpoint.

Throughout the search and arrest, Holmes was extremely compliant, the officer said.

"He was very, very relaxed," Oviatt said. "These were not normal reactions to anything. He seemed very detached from it all."

Oviatt said Holmes had extremely dilated pupils and smelled badly when he was arrested.

Most people immediately see that something is just not right with James Holmes. Whether he has been drugged or otherwise influenced, something is truly not right with him. The defense attorneys intend to introduce testimony from two people who can establish his insanity, although the prosecution attempted to block it with no success.
