The Healing Art of Writing

When you think about healing, what is the first thing that comes to mind? For most people, probably one or more of the following would be their first line of defense against illness or injury.

  • Correct Diagnosis
  • Proper Medication
  • Healthy Diet
  • Regular Exercise
  • Rest, Relaxation and Sleep
  • Emotional Well Being

Over the years I have discovered that there is something else that can quickly and easily help us to heal from whatever ails us, whether it is physical, emotional, financial, relationship, or even spiritual issues. I have used this healing method with private clients, in large workshops, and especially for myself whenever my current life concerns loom big and heavy and seem unsolvable.

What I have discovered is the simple art of writing - writing about what I am thinking, feeling, seeing, being, doing and experiencing. One of my clients had a fear of flying so I suggested that he have some paper and pen ready as soon as he boarded the flight and sat in his seat. He followed my advice and started writing immediately. For the first time in his life he was able to remain calm as the plane took flight. His mind was so focused on what he was writing and what he was feeling as he wrote, that he was barely affected by the change in altitude.

How often do YOU write? What do you write about? For people who have not been regularly writing, I would recommend to start a journal. Every day, at a specific time, write about 3 pages. Start with whatever is on your mind: "I haven't done the dishes. The children are crying and I'm upset. My bodfriend was angry today. I wish I could meet someone. I'm tired and I want to go back to sleep. I'm mad at my father because.... Just keep writing for 3 pages. And on the 3rd page, ask some important question for which you would like to have an answer.
