As a pet parent of a dog, you may often hear how important it is to keep him/her physically fit. Walking your dog is not only great exercise for your dog but for you as well. It is a time to bond with your canine while also being a fun activity. For your dog’s safety, a harness is a better choice than a collar. There are various reasons for choosing a harness over a collar. Dogs can slip out of a collar much easier than a harness. Pet owners have more control over the dog when wearing a harness. And, there are medical reasons not to put a collar on your dog. A harness may look difficult to put on but it can be a simple process with a little practice. Choices of harness and how to put them on your dog can be found at your local Rockford PetsMart at 6320 East State Street, Rockford or PetCo at 6305 East State Street, Rockford.
If you are considering putting a harness on your dog, begin with the appropriate size harness for your pet. Measure the circumference around your dog’s chest near the breastbone. It is important for the harness to fit comfortably. When looking for a harness, you will note that styles do vary. If you have questions, speak with a staff member at the local larger pet supply store. They can usually help you decide on the right harness for your dog and the appropriate way to put it on.
Use treats to encourage cooperation from your dog. Straddle your dog with the rear facing you. Give your dog a small treat and a lot of praise while putting on the harness. Your dog will associate the process as a positive behavior.
Have the metal ring facing upward and toward the back of the dog. Place your dog’s head through the loop with the metal ring sitting on the dog's back.
Lift one leg and insert it in one of the openings on one side of the breast plate. Repeat the procedure with the second leg and check to be sure the breast plate is evenly positioned.
Check for a secure fit of the harness in the front and under the chest area. You want to make sure your dog can't slip out of the harness over its head or that its legs don't get caught in the harness if left too loose. The harness is now securely in place.
Be sure to get a proper fit on the harness. You should not be able to slip more than two fingers between the harness and your dog.
Your dog will feel so much more comfortable in a harness than a collar which can feel more confining and cause choking.
