The Harlem Globetrotters stop by the KFC Yum! Center January 15

The tune is familiar. The uniforms are instantly recognized. The talent is unbelievable.

The Harlem Globetrotters have played in more than 120 countries for more than a million fans in their 85-year history. With over 20,000 games now under their belt, the Globetrotters are setting off for another tour in 2012. One of those tour stops will be the KFC Yum! Center on January 15, for two great shows at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. to thrill kids ages 1 to 99.

The pop culture icons have appeared on television programs such as The Amazing Race, The Today Show, Good Morning America and many more. But, what some may not know is that the world famous team has come a long way from their humble beginnings.

In 1926, 24-year-old Abe Saperstein decided to organize a five-member basketball team in order to promote a small nightclub in New York called, The Savory Ballroom. He called the team, “Savory Big Five” and booked games to showcase their amazing talents. The name didn’t stick, and in 1927 the team was officially renamed the “Harlem New York Globetrotters.” In 1933, the Globetrotters experienced a streak of successes and expanded their tour to include other northern states like Montana and North Dakota. Just a year later in 1934, the team celebrated their 1,000th game. Then, in 1941, the now famous Reese “Goose” Tatum joined the team and created the comedic style of the successful venture known and loved today.
