The hardest question to answer once you’ve made it to the top

“Who do you trust?”

For chief executives, it’s often the most vexing question of their career because the answer is so difficult to determine – even harder than knowing whether the joke you just told is as funny as the guffaws from your subordinates would indicate.

To lonely-at-the-top CEOs, however, it’s no joke to be able to share your most troublesome concerns with those who don’t have a vested interest in the answer.

Greg Behm, Group Chair for Vistage, leads CEO peer groups in search of individual answers to their most vexing business and personal questions.

“We even help CEOs find answers to questions they didn’t know they had,” says Behm.

Who to hire, how to fire, when to exert control, when to let go, how to handle your pending divorce from your company or your spouse – no topic is considered off limits for a Vistage CEO peer group to address.

“Vistage isn’t just for addressing problems,” Behm makes clear. “A lot of times, we find that the group’s ability to hold each member accountable for making progress toward their goals can make a profound difference in their lives, both professionally and personally.”

Greg Behm brings a couple of decades of his own experience with some of the area’s bigger corporations to the table each month. Marriott, Black & Decker, T. Rowe Price – each has had an impact on his approach to coaching members within his Vistage CEO peer group.  Behm rounds out the monthly group gatherings with individual consultations to make sure every member is being held accountable – to themselves.

“Typically, CEOs who come in with the attitude that they have all the answers don’t do well in a Vistage group,” Behm says. “But for those who are open to learning from the honest reaction, feedback and input of their peers, it’s a fast route to some straight answers they’d never get otherwise.”
