'The Hangover' helps Warner Bros. pull in over $2 billion at the box office in 2009

This man (and that baby) helped Warner Bros. make $2 billion.

It's been a record year for movie ticket sales, and the studio at the top of the list for most tickets sold?  Warner Brothers, with a staggering $2 billion-plus in sales.  How did Warner Brothers pull it off?  We've got all the details below, my gentle Examiner readers....

Thanks in no small part to this summer's smash-hit comedy "The Hangover", Warner Brothers has been announced as the highest-banking film studio of the year with over $2 billion in ticket sales.  That's a whole lotta tickets, folks.

The Hollywood Reporter's got their own story on the announcement, wherein they give most of the credit to Warner Bros. franchise "Harry Potter".  That's great and all, but we'd like to think the $277 million that "The Hangover" earned this year was a big factor, too.  Here's what they're saying over at the Reporter:

Warners projects a $2.99 billion domestic tally and nearly 20% market share through Dec. 31. But as certain as the picture is at the pinnacle of year-end rankings, other top positions remain cloaked in uncertainty.

And, yes, the latest "Harry Potter" film did pull in a staggering $929 million (that's worldwide, mind you), but it wasn't the only film putting up big numbers: the studio's also drawing big crowds with the comedy/mystery/action reboot of "Sherlock Holmes" (which nearly knocked "Avatar" off its pedestal this weekend), and non-comedy "The Blind Side", which has surprised everyone involved by earning a whopping $185 million thus far (and, as THR points out, it's still going strong in theaters).

How did the rest of the studios do?  Here's what The Hollywood Reporter had to say about their performance(s) this year:

Headed into the final frame, Paramount sits second with $1.44 billion and a 14% share, while Sony is third with $1.43 billion and a similar share. But Fox, with $1.25 billion (12%), has holiday tentpoles "Avatar" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" still going strong enough to give the it a real shot at one of the medal positions.

Did we really have to bring the word "squeekquel" into this conversation?  Speaking of things we'd rather not bring up (irony alert!), the Reporter's article points out that Sony had the earliest hit of the year back in January, when comedy "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" raked in a stupefying $176 million in theaters.  Really?!

So, congratulations to Warner Brothers for winning the battle over who gets the most of our film-going money.  Enjoy the moment, Warner Brothers, and then get to work on that "Hangover" sequel you keep teasing film geeks with; we're ready for more.
