The Growing Stage, The Children’s Theatre of New Jersey, located in the Historic Palace Theatre on Route 183 in Netcong, New Jersey will present for two weekends only the Studio Series Presentation of WILEY AND THE HAIRY MAN from February 17th to February 26th with performances Friday evenings at 7:30 PM, Saturday and Sunday matinees at 4:00 PM.
Danny Campos, a longstanding member of The Growing Stage production team, teaching staff and Director of Audience Development is the director for this production.
The work, currently celebrating its 40th anniversary was created by Suzan Zeder and recognized with the Best Original Play Award by TYA/USA, the international service organization for professional theatre for young audiences.
"WILEY AND THE HAIRY MAN, set deep within the mysterious Tombigbee Swamp, centers around a fatherless boy, his conjure-woman Mother, his faithful dog, and the Hairy Man who haunts Wiley’s days and dreams. Through rhythm and rhyme, a Chorus creates the mystery of the swamp. The magic of this play is not fairy dust — it is soil. The magic of the earth, the mud of the swamp, and the magic of survival are the ingredients for this piece. In an exciting duel of wits, Wiley learns to rely upon his own resources and conquers two villains; the Hairy Man and his own fear."
WILEY AND THE HAIRY MAN is an all youth production, featuring the talents of Dalton Allison of Byram, who recently played the role of Ricky Ricks in The Growing Stage production of MOTHER HICKS, as Wiley and Pierre Got of Sparta portraying the Hairy Man. Also in the cast are Brooke Pennington of Hackettstown and Savannah Doelfel of Allamuchy playing Mammy and Dog. Rounding out the production are 12 young performers portraying the swamp chorus.
The Growing Stage is the outstanding professional theatre for young people and their families in New Jersey. This production is part of their Studio Presentation Series.
This series initiated in the fall of 2009 is targeted for specific-aged audiences rather than the wide-reaching family fare of the Main Stage. The series provides community artists with a unique opportunity to participate in the creative process of “trying out” new, more experimental works under the direction of emerging professional artists. This program allows the company to both cultivate new talent and challenge audiences
"Currently celebrating its 30th season, The Growing Stage, The Children’s Theatre of New Jersey strives to provide audiences with the unique and affordable opportunity to share a fun, culturally significant moment in their intimate and very special venue." The company is also showcasing its restoration of their front façade which has recently undergone major changes in keeping with its recognition of being on the National, State and County Registers of Historic Places.
