Bonnie Kohl wasn't out of the restaurant business for long. She closed her suburban Delmar restaurant, The Rustic Gourmet, in April, but on Monday opened The Grille at 138 in downtown Albany.

The new venture fills the space at 138 Washington Avenue, opposite the Albany Institute of History & Art, that formerly was home to a pair of pubs, Anna O'Keefe's then Smitty's. The Grille currently serves lunch and dinner weekdays, dinner on Saturday and, according to a staff member, will introduce a Sunday brunch menu on September 7.

Unlike the decor of the predecessor operations, Kohl's version divides the space into four separate areas -- dining area, front tables that take advantage of the large window, bar andlounge seating complete with a communal table.

The lunch and dinner menus have some interesting offerings -- such salad dressings as warm bacon vinaigrette, blood orange vinaigrette and house dressing with roasted shallots; a stuffed croissant lobster roll; gremolata-topped beef shank osso bucco with root vegetables over polenta, and a seafood Newburg consisting of sautéed lobster, scallops and shrimp topped with a puff pastry in a classic Newburg sauce, served with four-grain rice. You can survey the wine list here.
