The Greatest Sum

Maya Angelo once said that a person is the sum total of everything they’ve seen or heard (to paraphrase) or interfaced with overall.  These are pretty profound words.  Basically, she is saying that you are reflective of all of your experiences thus far.  This includes the happiest moments and also your most hurtful ones.  It is inclusive of your regrets and mistakes; memories that you’ve probably worked hard to try to forget.

Are you wondering why or how this realization is relevant to you?

The relevance pertains to the ownership of your past actions, the acceptance of your current self and the wisdom to move forward considering it all.

The word human, as defined by the Encarta dictionary, means imperfect.  Yes, to be human is to be flawed.  If you embrace this and work to live healthy, you are moving forward with intention to do better; learning from past mistakes.  If you’re in denial of your past actions, you’ll never be able to free yourself from this negativity.  Take ownership, accept that you are flawed (love thyself) and move on.

It really isn’t that difficult if you can brave both owning your past and forgiving your mistakes.  This is necessary to enable your growth.

Remember, you are the greatest sum of your whole journey. The times of hardship taught you endurance and your mistaken choices taught you, by consequence, to do better.  The footprint of your life has shaped who you are and because of this you are able to navigate to a bigger and brighter future; one that reflect genuine intent fueled by purpose.
