In the 80s, I didn’t personally know anyone else who was vegetarian. But, the times are changing! Sunday, May 15th, the great Seattle Vegan Chili Cook-Off was completely sold out. They had to turn 40 people away at the door. A day before the event Anika from Vegan Score had so many people begging for tickets, she couldn’t keep up with the emails and tweets. That’s not to mention all the people who discovered the sold out news on the web site and wept silently while ticket holders enjoyed their chili.
There were 14 different chili recipes to sample, My favorite was from the woman in the photo who added beets to her masterpiece. The level of spice got hotter and hotter as you went down the line. My taste buds called it quits as we neared the end of the line. I love the creativity though, bourbon and chocolate, along with red hot chili peppers!
With all the volunteers, approximately 200 people filled the Mount Baker Club House in Seattle. DJ Pelvis set the party mood with 60s music. Corn bread companies and bakeries included gluten-free products along with their regular tasty treats. 6 animal rights organizations had tables and 25 sponsors donated prizes to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place chili cooks.
This event was co-sponsored by Seattle Vegan Score, Northwest Animal Rights Network (NARN), Earth Residents United, Action for Animals (AFA), the Seattle Animal Defense League (ADL), and Green Vegans. 100% of profits from this event will be used to put on Seattle's first Vegan Iron Chef competition scheduled for late 2012. NW Veg Scene Rules!
