Vantage Point NY, comes from the definition of what RE: means at the beginning of a word. (playground ambience) This is Richard Beattie, and as a writer I was taught that “the essence of writing is…re-writing.” Journalism 101. Over the years I have looked up the meaning of those two little letters- The R and the E and how they often preface something that is actually much deeper than having to do something over. So I started to research the great revivals; revolutions; and reconstruction, rebuilding and as I am more of a rebel leader I began to re-examine my motives; my approaches and the power I call on to renew my strength.

The great “Re’ is often associated with doing something over. That doesn’t sound so great- does it? Like the kids who are playing sandlot or stickball or even the after school game of two hand touch. “After further review- no one saw what happened and we call it a do-over: (whistle-REDO!) But these two little letters have a little more substance than –re-doing something until we get it right. The designers of the English Language had a deeper purpose for the R and the E before the body of a word. Some dictionaries do weigh in heavy with the do-over, or once again meaning, but wait- there’s more: A recent edition to a popular collegiate Dictionary defined RE: “as seeing a subject and approaching it with new eyes!” So when you hear of a revision in the copy; we actually should look at that re-vision as a new vision- refreshed and renewed with perspective or an angle. When we revisit an issue we should try to see it in a new light, and maybe even reexamine our motives; pray about it; and reason with revisionists who may want to extract the richness of God’s motive, a Christ-like Approach; and renew our minds and hearts to reflect the power of the Holy Spirit. Here is a true story to illustrate true repentance and re commitment to something bigger than the great “we.”

Renaissance and The Great Awakening

It was September 21, 1857 that business man Jeremiah Lanphier kicked off his first prayer meeting in New York City. At the start of 1858 the mid-day meetings were getting crowded. Most of the downtown gathering were businessmen. Newspapers reported that over 6,000 were attending various prayer services and meetings in New York and that an additional 6,000 met in Pittsburgh. While we talk about proclamations to the National day of prayer beginning in Washington, DC with the spark of prayer meetings held in 1858, in the nation’s capitol there were 5 daily prayer meetings to accommodate the crowds. The East Coast cities soon were on fire with prayer meetings, creative input in hymns; sermons; and prayer. The Great Reawakening in American Cities; was a Renaissance of Revival Worship Arts. The sign on the door of most businesses in our major cities read: “We will re-open at the close of the prayer meeting.” New Yorkers- listen to this, By May of 1858 the population of New York was 800,000. Of that total population 50,000 New Yorkers accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. I guess you can call that an Evangelical Free Lunch!

ReFocus on the Family

So in reading Jim Daly's Book Re:Focus I wondered if Jim got the richness of the RE in developing the message. Personally ReFocus, is a book that inspires people personally to look at their family life with new eyes. it also from a corporate standpoint allows and encourages evangelicals to look at the ministries we are part of; or head to look at our approach in a new way; the re-evangelizing of America and for the matter taking a look at the Gospel with new eyes and then going out to the world and guiding people to the life-changing and giving message that culture is hungry for.
