What is Pilates? It depends on who you ask. It is an exercise system or a form of movement that was originally developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century under the name Contrology. After Pilates' death, his work was carried on by his wife and students. They passed the knowledge down to another generation of teachers and the Pilates' linage has expanded exponentially ever sense.
With the expansion came augmentations to Joe's original methods, and began one of the greatest fitness debates ever. What is Pilates? Who has the right to say that they teach or practice Pilates? According to an October 2000 ruling by the United States District Court, anyone who wants. (You can learn more about the case here.) This ruling pitted those who teach only exactly as Joseph Pilates taught- known as Classical Pilates- against Contemporary Pilates instructors- those whose Pilates practice has expanded over the years to include new exercises and new ways of doing things.
