The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race will be held this October 14th through the 20th, 2013.
A quote from the website, "The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race (GCBSR) was founded to promote public awareness of the Chesapeake Bay's maritime heritage and encourage the preservation and improvement of the Chesapeake's natural resources. We accomplish this goal in part by donating the proceeds of the race to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, an organization working to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay. To date, $157,624 has been donated to support children's education programs of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation."
"Thirty-seven schooners participated in the 23rd annual race. The race and all race week activities are run by volunteers and donations keep the race going strong. Please join us — as a sailor, sponsor, volunteer or spectator — to make the 2013 race another great event for all involved! Until then, we wish you fair winds and smooth sailing!"
There are volunteer opportunities in Baltimore for pre-race activities, such as docking assistance, hospitality for the race crews, children's educational programs, and the "All Hands" party. There are also post-race opportunities available in Portsmouth. Follow the volunteer link for more information on how you can volunteer, or donate via PayPal
