According to their website, the Great Backyard Bird Count was “launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, ... [it] was the first online citizen-science project to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real-time.”

This year, the bird count is taking place Feb 14th -17th. The website has helpful documents and videos to help novices get started including downloadable instructions, how-to videos, online bird guides, and birding apps.
