The great Andre Ward would give the bruising Gennady Golovkin ‘a lot of trouble’

Australian prizefighter Jarrod Fletcher thinks Andre Ward would give Gennady Golovkin “a lot of trouble.”

Fletcher (18-1, 10 KOs), who won gold at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, was in attendance when Golovkin (29-0, 26 KOs) overwhelmed Osumanu Adama to successfully defend the WBA and IBO middleweight belts earlier this month.

Golovkin (29-0, 26 KOs), the recorder of 16 consecutive knockouts, floored the 33-year-old Adama (22-4, 16 KOs) in the first and sixth rounds.

Sensing a beaten man, “GGG” mercilessly stalked Adama and again bullied the challenger to the canvas with a savage hook in the seventh frame.

Referee Louis Pabon compassionately halted the lopsided beating at 1:20 of the decisive round.

A punishing, ferocious and accurate slugger, Golovkin has never been toppled in over 375 scraps.

Andre Ward is a slick fighter and I think he would give GGG a lot of trouble,” Fletcher, 30, told WBN. “But, I don’t believe his recent statement that Golovkin is being hyped. I think GGG is going to be very hard to be stopped. But, a slick mover of Ward’s standing has a good chance with him. That is, until he gets hit and feels the power.”

Ward (27-0, 14 KOs) last exited the squared circle on November 16 after outclassing Edwin Rodríguez to easily safeguard The Ring and WBA super middleweight crowns.

Using elite footwork, a brilliant jab, and ferocious left hook, Ward dominated Rodríguez and absorbed virtually no punishment over 36 minutes.

A brilliant tactician who hasn’t been conquered since he was a 12-year-old amateur, Ward’s next opponent remains undetermined.

Meanwhile, Irishman Andy Lee has emerged as the frontrunner to throw fists with the Kazakh bruiser on April 26 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The 29-year-old Lee (30-2, 21 KOs) will get knocked onto Queer Street by Golovkin a couple of months from tonight in Gotham.

Subsequently, Andre Ward may “give GGG a lot of trouble” at some point next autumn.
