The Great American Smokeout
is November 19
The Great American Smoke-Out is a day that the American Cancer Society has designated to assist individuals to quit smoking. This year’s 35th annual event will be held, Thursday, November 19th.
The American Cancer Society reports that tobacco related deaths and cancers cause an upwards of 440,000 deaths each year. Eighty-seven percent of lung cancer deaths can be attributed to lung cancer.
Tobacco use remains the largest preventable cause of premature death in the U.S.
The American Cancer Society has amazing resources that you can order online (most free of charge) or by calling at (800) 227-2345.
The website has new interactive tools to assist individuals in quitting, a survey to help smokers get started, and fact sheets to educate individuals interested in learning more about tobacco use, and new Quitline hotline where an ACS staff member will contact quitters should they need it.
Local resources and events are being held throughout the U.S. One cardiologist stated to me,
Quitting smoking is the single best thing you can do for your health."
Keep yourself busy when you have the urge for a cigarette
Keep a rubber band around your wrist to play with your hands rather than reach for a cigarette
Chew gum
Brush your teeth
Use hard candy or lollipops rather than a cigarette
