The Grammys are looking to obtain a different sort of award on Sunday night: ratings champion.
Before we get too deep into this, we should all but recognize the fact that the awards ceremony probably won't get anywhere near the numbers of "American Idol" (which is kind of ironic in itself), but there is a possibility that the broadcast could bring in 20 million viewers.
What does the Grammys have going for it this year? For one thing, we have several industry heavyweights up for the top prize, including Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga. All three artists are likely to bring in key viewers in the 18-34 demographic; if they don't, then the list of presenters (Justin Bieber, the Jonas Brothers, and Miley Cyrus) surely will.
Last year, the award ceremony managed an audience of 19 million Americans, which was an increase from the 2008 show. In terms of competition, CBS really doesn't even have that much to worry about: NBC is airing "Dateline" coupled with an "SNL" special while Fox has its typical run of animated comedies. ABC does have a new "Desperate Housewives" on the air, which will be the biggest threat to the network's ability to pull in ratings.
