In today's world we have more tools then ever to help on our fitness journey. The health care debate has people fired up on both sides of the topic. While in theory encouraging people to eat healthy is a good idea, we can't as a society force people to live a certain way. One thing I have found in my almost 15 years in the personal training business is that people's commitment to a healthy lifestyle must come from within. You must first find the desire to find the fire within. No trainer, not matter how good they are can force you to take the first step.
What that means is people who are successful in transforming their health are successful because they are experiencing tremendous discomfort and associate the positive changes to pleasure. While we have a huge obesity problem in this country, the way to help others is to make more small daily changes that over time will help them create a plan, that you can stick to. Think about it like this, when you were a child and had a teacher who forced you to study something you didn't like or feel a need for, you do so reluctantly. However when you find something you enjoy you learn it wholeheartedly and you make great strides in mastering it. I can tell of an experience I had with a client of mine, an older gentlemen who was sent to me by his doctor. His wife insisted he commit to his workouts, and while he regularly came to his workouts, he admitted that he would sneak bad foods into his diet whenever he could. We changed his workouts around and he just was not open to any change. His negative attitude inserted itself into his workouts and after a while he convinced his wife and doctor to leave him alone, he quit. I have also had clients who despite all the negatives their doctors told them about working out and how they hurt their injuries further made excellent progress.
