In what may be the scariest revelation from whistle-blower Edward Snowden so far, we learned today that the NSA is selecting targets for its "offensive hacking operations" exploiting the same cookies used by advertisers. In essence, Google and other communications companies are working together with the NSA to track the internet behavior of Americans.
This revelation could open the door to a renewed push for a Do Not Track list that would allow citizens the option of refusing all tracking by advertisers. It would be the same as the Do Not Call list that has been highly successful and is very popular with Americans. At the same time, a Do Not Track list would shut down the government's ability to gather information on Americans this way. Many Americans would welcome that.
