The gospel can be found within many genres and has been found in such for all of human history.
The protoevangelium refers to the proto as it prototype and evangel as in gospel that is found in Genesis 3:15 wherein the LORD God, YHVH, said to the serpent, satan:
I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.
There it is, the basic gospel message with the seed of the woman defeating the serpent. At the time this was spoken Adam and Eve were the only people on Earth. Thus, no one has ever lived without this basic gospel message being available to them somehow, somewhere, in some form.
Credit is due to the wonderfully active imagination of Rob Skiba for that which follows (with two items added by myself at the end)—see here for info on his sci-fi project Seed.
The 1976 AD movie Rocky was written by its star, Sylvester Stallone (directed by John G. Avildsen).
The movie begins with an image of Jesus.
The image is a painting on the wall of a church basement where Rocky Balboa, a nobody, is boxing.
Rocky gets a shot of the champ whose name is Apollo Creed.
Note Revelation ch. 9 which notes that “a star from heaven which had fallen to the earth” was given “the key of the bottomless pit.” When he opened it “smoke went up out of the pit, like the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit. Then out of the smoke came locusts” and these (not your average insect locusts) “have as king over them, the angel of the abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name Apollyon.”
Apollo is also the name of the Greek god of death, pestilence, the sun, music, poetry, crops, herds and medicine.
Creed is a statement of faith, an authoritative formula, etc.
Thus, Rocky gets a shot to fight the satanic doctrine.
In Rocky (the first coming), Rocky does not defeat Apollo Creed but does meet his bride to be.
In Rocky II (the second coming), Rocky does defeat Creed and also marries his bride: bride being biblically indicative of the church—the bride to which Jesus is wedded.
I would add that Rocky is known as the Italian Stallion and while I do not know what Italian has to do with it a stallion is a horse and in Revelation Jesus is seen riding a horse (Revelation 19:11).
Also, his name is Rocky and Jesus is known as the rock/stone, “The stone the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone” (Psalm 118:22 and Acts 4:11)
Well, as Rob Skiba notes, subsequent Rocky movies got pretty goofy and there may be no more gospel to be read into them...or, is there. My favorite was when Rocky is delivered the devastating news by his doctor that he has brain damage. The shock, the horror, the surprise, the…what? Come on, Rocky’s reply should have been, “Yo doc, tell me something I don’t know!”
For more on Stallone see my review of his book Sly Moves which is on diet, exercise and behind the movie scenes.
