In 1901, in the village of Corleone, Sicily a young boy witnessed the murders of his father and brother. Vito Andolini would later witness the murder of his mother at the behest of Don Ciccio a local mafia chieftain. The boy would make his way to America, he would have to wait for some six months due to a cough . He would find his way to New York City and would start a family of his own. Young Vito would do a favor for another man and hold onto some guns for a little while.
Vito and young Clemenza would enjoy a friendship for many decades from this point on. Vito's first hit would be on Don Fanucci (Gastone Moschin) a member of the Black Hand. Don Vito (Marlon Brando) would become the head of the local crime family. He would later be head of the Corleone family.
Years later Vito's daughter would be getting married to a young man by the name of Carlo Rizzi (Gianni Rossi). The whole family would be there. Sonny (James Caan), Fredo (John Cazale), and even Michael (Al Pacino) would make it to the wedding. Michael was just back from WWII as a decorated marine. Michael came to the wedding with Kay Adams (Diane Keaton) the woman he would later marry.
Don Vito would hold court and grant favors to those in need while the wedding was going on. One favor would be for his Godchild Johnny Fontane (Al Martino). Johnny wanted a role in a new upcoming film but he had upset the producer. Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) went to California and talked to the man, but got nowhere. So the next morning the producer woke up with his favorite horses head in his bed. Johnny got the part.
The Corleone wasn't just an ordinary crime family. Vito didn't want to get into the drug trade so when approached by an up and coming gangster he told him no. Sollozzo (Al Lettieri) took this personally and with the backing of other families war would break out.
Don Vito would be shot but would not die. This is about the same time that Michael would become of the crime family. Up to this point his father did not want him to be part of this side of the business. He wanted Michael to become "something" .
Michael would eventually shoot Sollozzo and a police captain. He would have to travel to Sicily for some time until the heat settled. In the mean time his brother Sonny would run the family business. Unfortunately due to Sonny's hot headed personality it cost him his life. Michael would eventually take over as his father was not 100% after he got shot. It would be Michael taking revenge on all the other families. I've got to admit he did it in such a beautiful way. He would also take care of his brother-in-law Carlo Rizzi for the abuse he was taking out on his sister Connie (Talia Shire). He would take a belt to his wife and what he thought this would be allowed. What an idiot!
The Corleone Family would later move out to Nevada and settle on a beautiful lake. They still had control of all the east coast part of the family but you could see tension brewing. At the first communion of his son Anthony, Michael would also have to hold court and grant favors. His sister Connie wanted money to get married to some fool. Michael said no. A Senator was trying to squeeze money out of Michael and well he got set up for a murder and would later pay Michael. An old soldier of the family tried to hit Michael on his own property and would later take his own life.
During the 1950's Michael and a man by the name of Hyman Roth would try to move in on the Cuban gambling and hotel business. Roth who had been trying to leave this life through heart attacks would later die by the Bullet.
Michael would even go as far as having his brother Fredo shot and killed because it was Fredo who gave out information that led to the assassination attempt on Michael and his family. Michael would later divorce Kay and give her custody of the children. He never stopped loving her. Decades later he would tell her so. Michael would achieve more than his father ever thought of but it was Michael who had more to answer to God for.
In his later years Michael would try and separate himself from the crime part of the family. It would always drag him back in. Even when he was receiving honors from the church, he would have to do business with the crime portion of the family.
Michael would ultimately loose one of the most important parts of his life, his daughter. Mary (Sophia Coppola) would die in his arms. Her brother and mother would be by her side when she died.
Michael would die a lonely man. He had more money than he could have ever imagined, but he was alone. To die alone has to be one of the biggest insults to a person's life.
