Tonight's Central Iowa live music events are topped by two very different concerts: The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger and Hairball.

The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger (pictured) is the creation of John Lennon's son Sean Lennon and his musician/model girlfriend Charlotte Kemp Muhl. The group, named from a short story written by Kemp Muhl, combines avant-garde, psychedelic rock, and folk music. The GOASTT's fourth release, Midnight Sun, came out on April 29 on the couple's Chimera Music label. The duo will perform tonight at Wooly's in Des Moines' East Village tonight at 8 p.m. Tickets for the all ages show are $15, and UK psychedelic act Syd Arthur will open the show.

An hour earlier at 7 p.m., the arena rock tribute band Hairball will take the outdoor stage at Simon Estes Amphitheater as part of the Nitefall on the River summer concert series. The "Bombastic Celebration of Arena Rock" includes impersonations of lead singers and guitar players from Eighties and Nineties staples like AC/DC (see video), Alice Cooper, Guns N' Roses, Poison, Motley Crue, KISS, Van Halen, Queen, Journey, Aerosmith, and others. The Minneapolis-based six-man collection of musicians has become an Iowa favorite, performing regularly on Nitefall and Iowa State Fair stages, as well as other venues across the state. Tickets for the all ages concert are $25, and Des Moines party band Gimikk will open the show.
