The German Shepherd Dog and the Breed Survey - Part 3

Please be sure to read The German Shepherd Dog and the Breed Survey Part 1 and The German Shepherd Dog and the Breed Survey Part 2

Once the judge has fully evaluated each dog in working ability, temperament, conformation and movement he will then give each dog a rating of either Koerklasse 1 (Kkl1) or Koerklasse 2 (Kkl2).  Kkl1 means that the dog is “recommended for breeding” and Kkl2 means that the dog is “suitable for breeding”.  If the judge feels that the dog does not show good enough qualities for breeding purposes he can choose to not award a Kkl1 or Kkl2 in which case the dog is deemed unsuitable for breeding.  There will possibly be some changes to the breed survey this year in which the different class ratings will be taken away and a dog will simply receive a Kkl.  They will do away with the Kkl1 and Kkl2 ratings.

The entire purpose of the breed survey is to help maintain the proper characteristics and breed worthiness in the German Shepherd Dog breed.  In Germany, in order for a litter of puppies to receive “pink papers” both parents must have completed their breed survey.  Pink papers are a type of SV (German Shepherd Dog club of Germany) registration papers which are the highest papers that a litter can have when born.  If the parents have their working title, show rating and passing hip/elbow certifications but have not completed their breed survey’s then the resulting litter will be issues “white papers”.  Obviously here in the United States there is nothing to force breeders to do these things with their breeding dogs.  However, there are many breeders who do hold this high standard and follow the SV breeding guidelines.

When looking for a breeder in the Akron area, you can start your search by viewing the USCA’s breeder directory page.  By purchasing a puppy out of parents that have their breed survey you are stacking the odds in your favor that your puppy will be healthy, sound in temperament, correct in structure and have proper characteristics for the breed.  Even if you are just interested in a pet, these traits are still important as they help to ensure that your puppy will grow into a sound healthy adult who is eager to listen and learn.
