Lawrence, Oaklandon, and the southeast side of Geist Reservoir, have many restaurants that cater to a wide range of clientele. Korean, Chinese, Mexican, and even Italian cuisine restaurants can be found in the area, but locating luxury dining was a little trickier, until we visited the intersection of Fox and Oaklandon Roads. We found a newer restaurant that was established seven months ago back in August, 2013.
Located at 11705 Fox Road, is The Gathering Bistro & Pub. The restaurant anchors one end of the Geist Center shopping complex, which is a landmark within the neighborhood. Before we enter the restaurant, let’s examine the exterior.
Like many suburban restaurants, parking in a non – issue. Parking spaces are shared among businesses located in the complex and there’s plenty of lighting to alleviate security concerns. The shopping center has multiple entry points allowing for easy feasibility into the parking areas, while speed bumps near entry doors add an additional layer of safety. Let’s check out the actual restaurant.
The restaurant has three different sections, the main dining area, a bar area, and a large patio arrangement. We’ll start at the patio, which is located on the east side of the restaurant and work our way in.
The patio area is relatively large with an open fire fit. Landscaping surrounds three quarters of the patio, leaving a clear view facing north toward the parking lot. This direct view provides an extra level of security for customers entering and leaving their vehicles.
West of the patio area inside the restaurant is the dining area. There is ample seating throughout with a secluded area that would be ideal for private gatherings. A two way fireplace adds a level of romance to the overall experience while a complete separation from the bar creates a quiet atmosphere.
On the west side of the restaurant is the bar area. Ten televisions are located strategically throughout, providing a sports bar atmosphere while the glistening from the fireplace reminds you that you’re in a luxurious environment. The Gathering has over 35 different beer choices and eight tap lines, carrying 4 – 5 locally brewed beers at any given time.
Several specials are available throughout the week. From Sundays – Thursdays, senior citizens (62+) receive a 20% discount from 11am – 6pm and on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4pm – 6pm selected appetizers are available to all customers free of charge. If that wasn’t enough, The Gathering has $3 drink specials all night long on Tuesdays and Thursdays and these specials do include some higher end brands instead of the traditional house brands you generally find at other establishments. Now it’s time to check out the food.
On this particular visit, I went with the house salad, Philly Cheese Steak, and Devil Eggs. The House Salad was a good way to start off and the Philly Cheese Steak alone was enough to resolve anyone’s appetite. The Devil Eggs were a nice touch and after the meal, I could easily sense that I would be returning in the near future.
Of course there are plenty of other options available. The Gathering has a 12oz Prime Rib for only $16.95, Mom’s Meatloaf, which is served with Redskin Potatoes and Green Beans for $15.95, and among many others, the Clincher, which is an 8oz Flatiron Steak, marinated in Molly and Jill’s special recipe for only $18.95. Their complete menu can be found on their website.
After speaking with customers and staff on several occasions, it became clear that the restaurant focuses around the customers. Everyone seemed to be well dressed and smiling. During the weekend evenings, live music is played which adds to the overall appeal. After we departed it was clear that The Gathering brings a level of luxury dining to the Lawrence & Geist area.
