Science fiction seems to be catching up to our reality faster and faster these days. Last week Apple unveiled the iPad and on January 14th Recon Instruments and Zeal Optics unveiled their latest creation the Recon-Zeal Transcend. The iPad may bring back images of Tom Cruise in Minority Report but the Transcend is seemingly something from pure science fiction, until now.
Recon Instruments and Zeal Optics combined forces to create a first of it’s kind, groundbreaking pair of goggles. These aren’t just any goggles though, they are unlike anything you have ever seen, quite literally. The Recon-Zeal Transcend is a the most advanced pair of alpine goggles you will ever wear. Projected on the lens in front of you is an easy to see, unobtrusive heads-up display detailing everything from speed, time, temperature, altitude, GPS and much more.
This may just look like a cool tech toy but it has a practical purpose in training, safety and backcountry skiing/snowboarding. The Transcend will save your records for later analysis with the included software and the built in USB connection.
Built on a lens from Zeal Optics and available in either Polarized or Polarized + Photochromatic versions. The initial release prices are listed as $350 and $450 USD respectively and will be available online and in stores worldwide starting in Fall 2010.
With the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver less that two weeks away this may be a perfect to unveil an innovative product such as the Transcend. Will we see a handful of Olympians with these high tech goggles warming up? We can only hope so. The Recon-Zeal Transcend represents an advance in not only personal electronics but also in the field of advanced optics. The technology in use has far reaching future potential for use in both civilian and military applications and even possible adaptive technologies to assist users with sight problems or even learning disabilities.
So if you are a hardcore backcountry explorer or someone who just takes their skiing/snowboarding training and experience serious then the Recon-Zeal Transcend google should be on your Fall wish list. Direct to eye, heads up display in a high tech goggle; it doesn’t get much cooler that this.
