The Furry Fitness Challenge by Camp Bow Wow

Camp Bow Wow is always doing something for and with animals. Now they are incorporating the pet’s owners. Statistics say the percentage of Americans that are considered obese in the US is 34%. They also have calculated that the percentage of dogs that are over weight is at 44% and cats are at 57%. These numbers are too high and Camp Bow Wow intends to help pull that number down.  They have created an interactive program where the most combined percentage of weight loss between the pet and its owner will receive one full year of services at a Camp Bow Wow. This is a value of $3,000. This will start June 11, 2011 and end August 6th, 2011. Participants will have up to one week to enter the challenge as it will close for entries on June 17th, 2011.

Heidi Ganahl, CEO and founder of Camp Bow Wow, said in a recent press release, “Simply introducing play and exercise back into a pet’s daily routine, as we do with our ‘all day play’ environment at Camp Bow Wow and our dog walking services at Home Buddies, as well as adjusting diet, have shown to improve socialization and overall physical and mental health for our pets. We hope that this initiative will encourage owners to not only begin to lead healthier lifestyles for themselves, but also for their furry friends.” When pet owners enter the “Furry Fitness Challenge”, they will be able to keep a diary of on their own contestant webpage. Here they will enter their beginning weight of both the owner and the pet. They can also upload pictures or video of their weight loss throughout the entire challenge. It will be a way for other contestants to help push each other by seeing where others are at to know how much more they need to go.  For more information visit their site and look for the “Furry Fitness Challenge”.

Within this interactive community of weight losing teams they will be receiving help from veterinarian Dr. Derrick Landini, DVM and also general surgeon and weight loss specialist, Dr. Michael Snyder. Dr. Landini will be taking care of questions under the “Ask the Vet” to get answers on questions as well as providing participants with information on exercising your pet, animal obesity facts, food suggestions and much more. Dr Snyder will be taking care of the questions from the “Ask the Doctor” area and helping provide resources for exercise and meal planning. “The Furry Fitness Challenge will help inspire weight loss in both humans and animals, which will hopefully create long term lifestyle changes”, said Dr. Landini in a recent press release. “I look forward to helping people take control of the way they approach food and giving participants reasonable tools to help them succeed and live a full life”, said Dr. Snyder in a recent press release. They both felt the need to team up with Camp Bow Wow to help address this issue of obesity.

Participants will need to visit one of the Camp Bow Wow locations in order to sign up. It is there they will get their first team weigh in and get their interactive webpage profile created. All franchises will be hosting events for pets and their owners on June 11th, 2011. There will also be representatives from local gyms and veterinary clinics to help with any questions. During the sign-up process, Camp Bow Wow will be handing out free Flip Video Cameras to only 30 participants allowing them to track their workouts and weight loss to be shared on the website.
