The fur is flying over Joe Namath’s Super Bowl coat. The legendary former football pro not only made headlines for his botched coin toss at the big game, but also for his over-the-top fur coat. On Feb. 2, Us Weekly posted a pic of Broadway Joe’s supersize mink coat, along with a shot of the Hall of Famer donning a similar coat back in 1973.

While some fans slammed the look, Namath’s signature style was praised by The Hollywood Reporter. The entertainment website revealed that the NFL legend has regularly donned furry outwear since the 1970s. In addition, Namath’s style inspired the NFL to ban any off-brand apparel by league personnel during games.

While the fashion police critiqued Namath's look, the 70-year old former quarterback jumped the gun for the Super Bowl XLVIII coin toss and the referee had to stop him.

Meanwhile, animal rights group PETA chimed in on Namath’s fur coat with this retweet: ”TOO many. RT @a_ryan88 Yo @peta, how many animals died to make Joe Namath's fur coat?”

The group also slammed Chobani’s use of a real bear in a Super Bowl yogurt ad.
