The frugal Thanksgiving plan for next year begins on or around Thanksgiving this year, when items in the stores begin to go on sale. It continues into the summer months, when holiday items may be gleaned at yard sales, and continue year round by scouring thrift stores in the area.
-
Some food items, for instance, may be on sale after Thanksgiving because the stores now have an over abundance. Candies, spices and turkey can be frozen for next year. Canned pumpkin, cranberry sauce and apple pie filling will store on a shelf, as will boxed stuffing. If you have coupons for any of these items, use them for these sales. You could end up saving a great deal of money this way.
-
Dollar stores will also sell holiday items at discounted prices after turkey day. Expect to find 2/$1.00 deals, and possibly 3/$1.00 deals on decorations, as well as other items such as napkins, table cloths and cups.
-
Be on the lookout for holiday table and kitchen linens, as well as aprons and pot holders, at Walmart, Kmart and other Bangor area stores. You may also be able to glean themed items such as platters and cake pans. Do not pass up the opportunity to get foil baking pans at this time as well, and movies that the family will enjoy next year.
-
The Goodwill, Hands of Hope and other area thrift stores may also have decorations. Baskets are available at these stores, which can be used on the Thanksgiving table next year to hold breads, rolls and other items.
-
Joanne Fabric and AC Moore will have an after Thanksgiving sale as well, where you can pick up fabric to use as basket liners and craft items needed for crafting next year.
-
Yard sales will net you some of these items, and may lead you to a great deal on helpful items like roasting pans and slow cookers. More than one slow cooker can be used on Thanksgiving. One might be used for a main meal of turkey and vegetables, while another will keep mulled cider warm.
While you are planning and collecting items:
-
Prepare your menu for next year. Figure out what you will provide, as well as what others might contribute.
-
Make decorations for the next feast.
-
Create invitations to hand out for next year.
-
Decide on and prepare for activities that will entertain the children during next years' celebration.
