The Freemont Diner first appeared here on June 11, 2009. I presumed, back then that owner Chad Harris would have a very sleepless night as he was scheduled to open the next day.
A lot has changed at Sonoma's Freemont since then. Harris and his team of upbeat-enjoying-their job-servers-have transformed a rickety hamburger shack into an inviting restaurant that signifies a part of Sonoma that tourists seldom feel.
The diner began as a breakfast and lunch spot along the highway that bypasses downtown Sonoma. A few tables inside. A counter overlooking the kitchen with six stools and a few bright green picnic tables outside. A breakfast and lunch place, with a tremendous weekend breakfast menu and a line at the entrance to the humungous patio.
Then the tent sprung, covering the bright green picnic tables that have multiplied to accommodate the crowd. And suddenly, the crowd got bigger.
Dinner has never been on the menu at Freemont until recently. Now on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights adventurers can enjoy a well prepared selection of Barbecued Brisket, Pulled Pork, Chicken and an impressive variety of sides including Mac and Cheese, Brussels Sprout with Bacon and homemade baked beans.
Harris and his team have done an exceptional job of adding a flavorful style to the restaurant and a creative flair on the menu with some very simple dishes.
Harris has stamped his passion and love of the business on The Freemont Diner. It's the place where locals go to visit and visitors go to feel local. This Friday evening, locals and visitors alike will be listening to music under that great white tent.
