The Four Demons

“What makes the act of Forgiveness so complicated is the ego’s struggle to remain in control of our thoughts and emotions. This is why the ego summons hostile emotions and negative forces to work against the Inner Spirit, and tries to prevent us from forgiving others or ourselves.” (Tom Hinton, 10,000 Days)

In his book, 10,000 Days, available at Cleveland's University Lofts Bookstore, Tom Hinton quotes Dr. Holly A. Hunt who wrote Emotional Exorcism, where she identified four demons that cause us problems at the heart level.

The first demon is the Blocker Demon, which does what it can to stop people from caring for themselves. The Blocker Demon breeds sadness and depression, rather than love of self and others.

The second demon is the Negator Demon, which drives anxiety and worry. When we are frustrated and feeling stressed about where and when we need to be somewhere, or we can’t seem to find an answer to a problem, the Negator Demon intensifies that stress so we don’t function on a level of love. We create more stress by putting a time limit on something. Simply go to the mall and watch people under pressure in the crowds and chaos and you will see the Negator Demon at work.

The third demon is the Rouster Demon. Driven by emotional lows, the Rouster Demon takes us in our burned out state and wreaks havoc in our relationships. When people are tired and drained they often operate at a selfish level because they don’t want to lose any more energy, and they react defensively and say things they don’t mean, and many times someone gets wounded unintentionally.

The fourth demon is the Tempter Demon, drawing us to destructive acts that are toxic to our very being, whether it be to addictions or poor daily choices, the Tempter is there to draw us to the negative decisions that wreck our lives.

It is our own belief that we don’t deserve love that allows these demons to reign. The key to deliverance from these tormentors is a spirit of forgiveness that loosens the ego’s need to be “right” at the expense of someone else being wrong.

It is forgiveness that allows us to release the need for someone to pay for our mistreatment, and allows us to live without someone else’s wrong actions occupying the space in our mind any longer.

It is not about forgetting; it is about becoming empowered by choosing to be free rather than enslaved to something in the past and by the four demons who care for nothing but our own demise. When we choose love, we choose freedom, and in freedom we find that we can express our true self, a giver and a receiver of all that is good and holy.
