As someone who’s lived on Staten Island almost their whole life, the thought of giving up a yard and ample parking is horrifying. But for some the idea of moving to the “forgotten borough” is equally horrifying. But it doesn’t have to be. Here are my top 3 picks for apartment living on Staten Island.
The Grymes Hill Apartments at 42 Arlow Road, Rentenna Score: 57 (average)
Just a five minute drive from the Verrazano bridge, and a 20 minute bus ride away from the Staten Island Ferry (which is free!). For $1,000 a month you can get a one bedroom apartment with access to a tennis court, pool, playground and you’re only a fifteen minute walk away from two parks and a golf course. Heat and water is included in your rent, and there are on site laundry facilities as well as 24-hour emergency maintenance.
Studio- $775
1 Bedroom- $1000
2 Bedroom- $1300
3 Bedroom- $1500

For $1100 you get a one-bedroom apartment with hardwood floors, access to the pool and views of the Silver Lake Golf Course. There’s also plenty of on-site and street parking available.

Tysens Park Apartments at 255 Mill Road, Rentenna Score:63 (Good!)
My top pick for a Staten Island rental, would be the Tysens Park Apartments. Located just a 10 minute walk from three shopping plazas; super markets, restaurants, a movie theater, clothing stores and a post office are all right there. While this option doesn’t offer a swimming pool or tennis court, there is a playground right across the street, and the best part you’re just a 15-minute walk away from the beach! While the Tysens Apartments are a little further into Staten Island, you’re just a 15-minute drive from Verrazano. And your commute to work couldn’t be easier, there are nine express bus lines going to different parts of Manhattan along with two local buses that can get you to the Ferry. For $1100 a month you can get a one bedroom apartment in an elevator building with on-site laundry facilities and 24 hour emergency maintenance.

To me Staten Island has always been the best of both worlds, I get the benefits of living in one of the most amazing cities in the world, but in a slightly suburban setting. I'm just a 30 minute bus ride away from downtown manhattan and a 20 minute drive from Bay Ridge so I never feel like I'm far from the action, but there's plenty for me to do on Staten Island too.
