September 11 - 13 in Folsom, CA
It’s during these dog days of summer in Sacramento that people begin thinking about the upcoming cool down through the fall months. When the mornings are crisp and the days are pleasant we quickly forget about the current back-to-back 100 degree days. It’s on the early side of this cool down, September 11th through the 13th, that a major bicycling event occurs in nearby Folsom: The Folsom Cyclebration.
As mentioned in a previous article, the Folsom Cyclebration provides rides, races and activities for the entire family. From downhill mountain bike races and a metric century to cruiser rides and treasure hunts, this bicycle festival is designed to celebrate riding, not just hammering.
Ground zero will be the Festival and Expo at Negro Bar State Park in Folsom on Saturday, September 12th. It is here where a number of rides and races begin and end. Also on hand will be music, food from local restaurants, vendors and bike demos. For an impromptu biathlon, there will even be kayak rentals down by the water with lifeguards on duty.
Here’s a little-known treat: Take your family and bikes to the Two Bridges Circuit Race in downtown Folsom on Sunday. At 1:00PM you can ride the race circuit (a 1.3 mile lap) while the roads (including lanes on both bridges) are closed to traffic.
Here is a short list of events in and around Folsom during the Cyclebration:
- Metric & Half Metric Century
- Cyclocross Race
- Family Treasure Hunt
- Cruiser Ride
- Mountain Bike Cross Country, Short Track & Downhill Races
- Road Criterium and Circuit Races (Especially observer-friendly)
- FamJam Freeride and Dirt Jump Exhibition (Very fun to watch)
Not only will it be a great opportunity to get outside and enjoy a celebration of bikes, it is also important to support the efforts of the organizers for this event. Participation means it will be back next year and the one after. You can even volunteer for the event - just contact the organizer through the website listed below. So come out, enjoy the cooler weather and celebrate the bicycle.
