Tonight's episode of The Following ended in a way that personally really intrigued us. The idea of teaching a kid to kill could be gratuitous, or it could be the next piece in this psychological puzzle. Can you even teach a kid to kill, or does the desire have to be within them the whole time? It's an interesting nature versus nurture experiment. And in the case of The Following, it's also an interesting parallel to Jacob's (Nico Tortorella) predicament.
The Following creator Kevin Williamson knows that such a topic is ripe for controversy, and though it could provide an interesting debate and discussion, he admitted to LA TV Insider Examiner that he doesn't intend to take such a discussion any farther in his first season of The Following than the simple video scene sent to Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) at the end of "The Poet's Fire."
"That was truly just meant as a message to Ryan Hardy. They were trying to shock him and the mother. But it really raises the interesting question," Williamson said when we sat down with him in Los Angeles.
"It wasn’t like I was trying to shy away from it, I just didn’t know where to take it because I had so many other storylines to tell, and honestly, he’s a kid! He can only work a few hours a day. It might have gone a little further otherwise, to be honest. It’s not something I want to shy away from, it’s just not necessary for this story."
While we know we are going to love whatever Williamson does throw at us, we have to admit we're a little disappointed to see this potentially fascinating and completely unique thread dropped. The initial shock value for Hardy is one thing, but it is something that will surely wear off quickly. The fear of little Joey (Kyle Catlett) growing up to be more like his dad than anyone expected should remain.
The Following airs on FOX on Monday nights at 9 p.m.
