'The Following's' Kevin Williamson previews season 2: 'It's an emotional season'

"The Following" season 2 premiere is just weeks away, and on Monday, Dec. 16, we uploaded a video interview with the series creator and executive producer Kevin Williamson to YouTube.

When "The Following" season 2 picks up, one year will have passed since the events of last year, and it's a "new story, brand new year with Connie [Nielsen]," Williamson previews. With this time jump, they can take a look at "Ryan a year later and how he's coping post-Claire and last year's events and how he's turned his life around a little bit and just build him up." In fact, Ryan's doing much better than he was last year. "He's sort of gotten his heart together," the EP explained. "He's taking care of himself. …The heart's a muscle. You just have to exercise it, and that's what he's done…physically, mentally, spiritually. He's in a different place."

One of the new characters coming in in season 2 is Max, Ryan's niece. "He hasn't really had a big relationship with her. There's really only a few Hardys left, because most of them are dead," Williamson says. "She's a cop, they're all cops in the Hardy family, and she very much loves having her uncle in her life. Even when he tries to push her away, she doesn't go anywhere. She's a really tough character."

Another relationship to keep an eye on this year is Weston and Ryan's. According to the EP, "Weston and Ryan have a lot of great chemistry, and it's a big part of the show this year, their relationship and how that sort of stops, starts, and twists and turns and that relationship's a lot of fun. Very emotional."

But what about last year's villain, Joe Carroll, who was presumed dead at the end of finale? Joe Carroll is alive, and the theme of the season is "resurrection." "We watch Joe Carroll and his path and Ryan Hardy and his path, and they both are trying to find some hope," he explains. "It's an emotional season." So what does that mean for the villain of the season? "There are some other villains that do surface in some interesting and surprising ways that will prove a challenge for not only Ryan but Joe Carroll as well," Williamson teases. "We keep bringing in new villains. It's something that happens throughout the entire season, it's not just one villain. …What happened last year spawned a whole bunch of people to surface."
