Summary: Ryan and Debra attempt to circumvent Nick in order to continue their search. Joe demands that Ryan reveal where Claire is to him and past followers return.
The show opens with Ryan/Debra being questioned by FBI board about how Carroll escaped. They believe he’s in a three state radius of Virginia. Meanwhile, Joe is meeting with all his followers while Ryan/Debra talk about Carroll. Joe starts to talk to the followers. Ryan is saying that he’s telling his followers to write their own chapters. Carroll asks what inspires his followers.
Debra/Ryan leave the meeting while Nick meets up to talk to Debra. He says D.C. is taking control. They said she’s still on to watch Ryan and to report to him.
A woman pulls up to her house and gets in with her groceries. She sees dishes in the sink and starts looking around the house. She sees Paul sleeping on the couch. Jacob shows up behind her and calls her mom.
A woman, Amanda, is talking to Carroll about her chapter. 2007 when she met with Carroll the first time. They talk about her letters. She tells him that her husband is cheating on her. She tells him how she shot her husband and his mistress. She says she took their bodies to Florida to dump bodies. She says she has no where to go. He tells her to go to Roderick. Present day. She talks about bringing his wife back.
Jacob talks with his mother. She asks him about the cult. She asks him to understand it. He says he can’t explain. She hugs him and he starts to cry.
Ryan is telling detective about a picture is not Jacob/Paul. Carroll calls Ryan. He asks about Mike. He asks about Claire. He then asks him how far must one man go before he breaks before ending the call.
Two women are eating a diner. One of the women leave. Amanda goes to the women in the booth. She says she needs to give someone a message for her. Her friend comes back. Amanda tells them that she has a spear gun and shoots it at the second friend and leaves.
Ryan/Debra go to the diner. He over hears the message that she was supposed to tell him. The 1st woman says that her friends name was Claire Matthews (which is Claire’s maiden name)
Jacob’s mom is helping Paul. Paul tells her that he never trusted Emma. 2008. Jacob/Paul/Emma are looking at pictures. She tells him to kill a woman because she doesn’t trust him. Present day. Paul goes on about how he can’t trust her.
Carroll is watching news feed of diner killing. Emma goes to Carroll. He tells her not to advertise what they did. Roderick comes in. Carroll asks about Jacob/Paul.
Jacob goes to see his mom. She says he’s got sepsis. She says he will die unless he goes to the hospital. He will need a blood transfusion and antibiotics. She tells him to leave before his father gets there.
Nick talks with FBI about Amanda. They go down the list of all the Claire Matthews.
A woman answers her phone. She turns on TV and she sees news about anyone named Claire Matthews to contact the police. The woman goes to answer the door and Amanda comes in. There is a struggle and she tosses Claire out of the window.
Nick is talking to press about the killings. Ryan thinks that Carroll is doing this to try and lure Claire out because if she knew aobut it, she would offer herself up.
Ryan and Nick talk about the killings.
Jacob’s mom tells him that Paul needs to go to hospital. Jacob tells her that he’s never killed anyone. He asks Paul to back him up. 2008. Paul talks about his father and how he abused him and how Paul killed him when he was 12. He tells Jacob to take the first stab so that he can trust him. Jacob takes the knife and Paul sees that he won’t stab the girl. He realizes that Jacob’s never killed anyone. He grabs the knife and goes to kill the girl. Present day. He says Jacob’s never killed anyone.
There is a party at the safe house. Emma sees Carroll flirting with some of the girls. Roderick sees this and talks to Emma. He says they are all filled with contradictions. Emma tells him to back off. He calls Emma’s bluff about Paul/Jacob. He tells her that he found her cell phone with the messages from Jacob.
Ryan tells Nick that he thinks Carroll is doing this to get to his wife. Debra comes in and says that there is a Claire Matthews that’s in trouble.
Jacob tells Paul that they got a email from Roderick with an address to meet him. He tries to help Paul leave but Paul tells him to leave him. He says he owes him. 2008 to the car scene Paul consults Jacob who is upset over the murder. He says he won’t tell Emma. He says now he will owe him one. Present day. He says he wants to be left behind so that his death can mean something. He tells him that he loves him. Jacob puts the pillow over Paul’s face and puts it down until Paul dies.
Nick is telling the police about Claire Matthews and how to find her. Ryan is looking for her when he finds Louise. Louise grabs a mask. A man asks her name and tells her to find the police because there is a woman trying to kill Claire Matthews. The man tells her to go away when they spot Amanda. Amanda stabs him before chasing after Claire. Ryan sees the man and goes after Amanda and Claire. She runs into the police. Louise comes and shoots the cop. Claire runs into the building. Amanda goes after her Louise refuses to drop her weapon so Ryan shoots her dead. Amanda shoots Ryan with a nail gun. Ryan finds Amanda holding the nail gun to Claire’s head. Amanda asks why Ryan had an affair with Carroll’s wife. Ryan says he did it because he loved Claire. He says the only way they can get a happy ending is if Ryan is dead. Amanda lifts the gun and Ryan jumps on her.
Roderick tells Joe that Louise is dead and Amanda has been arrested. He says that Nick made an uncritical call to Virginia to check in on Claire. He says that Claire is Huntington County Pennsylvania.
Debra tells Ryan that Amanda is going to D.C. for questioning. Nick comes over to them. Nick asks Debra about Claire. He sys it’s twisted that he love Claire.
Emma is pouring a drink when Roderick comes in. He tells her to follow him to a surprise. He brings her to Jacob.
What we learned/new notes
-Are we to expect that we will be getting a new ‘chapter’ every week from his followers?
-Jacob’s finally had his first kill. What will this mean for the future? Will he be more willing to kill in the future?
-Jacob’s back at the safe house which will certainly cause problems with Emma especially if/when he finds out about her tryst with Carroll.
-Joe knows where Claire is which means he will be making his move to bring her back to him.
