As a general rule I don’t do fashion shows. I missed Flor Mendoza’s last fashion show in Antigua but I saw some of the photos. The vision, if not the excuse, to experience her latest, a Summer Fashion Show, was more than I could ignore.
Flor, in her early forties, is that rare person for at least two reasons. First, she is a native of Antigua and secondly, she is a true ‘fashionista,’ both of which are very rare for this small colonial tourist center which I can home. She’s been in the dress and fashion business for over twelve years, and now has her 3rd location, called Dasha, on the very central 6th Avenida. She started putting on small productions in various hotels and has now graduated to the best venue in Antigua, Le Casbah on upper 5th avenida. The Casbah is one of the oldest nightclubs in town and by any measure, the glitziest and the most fashionable.
Last weekend was the scene of a series of great dresses, beautiful women and high fashion. Flor? a dazzling display of different outfits that made my camera wobble: my photos were horrible but she sent enough to make up for my lack of concentration. The ‘Summer Fashion Show’? Swimsuits and beach wear on a bevy of some of the most beautiful girls in Antigua: if you’re passing through and notice a poster on the shop called Dasha, you might want to change your plans for the weekend. The entrance is free, the show will invariably be later than advertised but the wait is worth it. I’ll have to focus on my camera skills.
It’s a new model that I’ve only had a month or so. I’ll have to go back for another show, if only for more practice. I never imagined doing fashion ‘shoots’ but these are too good to miss.
