Actor-singer Leon appeared on the “Tom Joyner Morning Show” Tuesday to promote the Blu-ray release of his 1991 film “The Five Heartbeats”. Leon starred in the cult classic with Robert Townsend, Michael Wright, Harry Lennix, Tico Wells and Diahann Carroll. According to the Fox Home Entertainment website where the film is available for purchase some of the features of the Blu-ray disc include deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes footage from the movie.

Leon who also starred in “Cool Runnings” and “Waiting to Exhale” told the TJMS morning crew it was Townsend who had a vision about how the film would turn out.

“While we were filming Robert just kept telling us about we hadn’t seen five Black men on the screen with just varied emotions, just being real people with one another. He just thought it was going to be huge.”

Townsend directed and co-wrote the musical drama about five friends who form a group and experience the highs and lows of the music industry.
