In 1977, the Atari 2600 console brought video games to households and started an industry that thrives today. Its success was a result of some very notable games. Here the five greatest Atari 2600 games of all time.

1. Pitfall! (1982)

Pitfall! was the second highest-selling game on the Atari 2600. But it accomplished much more than that. Pitfall! had incredible gameplay and depth. It also paved the way for side-scrolling video games like Super Mario Bros.

2. Pac-Man (1981)

In the 1980s, the Pac-Man arcade game transcended video games and embedded itself into pop culture. Atari capitalized on Pac-Man fever by releasing it for the Atari 2600 in 1981. People waited in long lines to purchase the game that became the most popular Atari 2600 game of all time. But not all the news was good. Atari overestimated the demand, and the game was disappointing.

3. Adventure (1978)

Adventure was an innovative game on the Atari 2600. It required more than just jumping, shooting and dodging. Adventure was an action-adventure game that needed to be explored. Adventure also included one of the first, well-known Easter eggs.

4. Breakout (1978)

Breakout was a successful port of the popular Atari arcade game. Its addictive gameplay kept players wanting more. Even today, you can find versions of the Breakout game for mobile devices.

5. Space Invaders (1980)

The Space Invaders arcade game translated well to the Atari 2600. It became iconic like Pac-Man, but on a smaller scale. Atari sold approximately one million copies of Space Invaders.
