Bucket List (from Urban Dictionary): A list of things you want to do before you die.
For many, a bucket list includes travel destinations, concerts, family goals, and fitness endeavors. A year ago today, my bucket list became one item shorter as I completed the Walt Disney World Marathon as part of Team In Training. This was a deeply rewarding experience and something that will live with me forever. Reflecting on this accomplishment, I have brainstormed a "Fitness Bucket List" for you!
Fitness Bucket List 2012:
1. Run a half-marathon or marathon
Yes, 13.1 or 26.2 miles seems like a daunting task. However, the journey you will embark on to complete the task is something you will never forget. Completing an endurance run can honestly change your life. It can give you faith in yourself and a shot of confidence many of us need! If you feel that you will not stay dedicated to the training, try signing up to run for a charity. This heightens the meaning of your endeavor and gives you even more to run for. My personal recommendation is Team In Training. This charity is unbelievable! Visit www.teamintraining.org/cpa for more information on the Central Pennsylvania Chapter. It is an experience of a lifetime!
Some local races on offer:
- Pittsburgh Marathon and Half-Marathon: May 6th
- St. Luke's Half Marathon (Allentown, PA): April 29th
- Gettysburg North-South Marathon: April 29th
- Harrisburg Marathon: November 11th
- Rock "N" Roll USA Marathon (DC): March 17th
- Chambersburg Half-Marathon: March 10th
2. Complete a Tough Mudder or Warrior Dash
Some people find the standard endurance race to be boring. Well, the Tough Mudder or Warrior Dash series could be for you. Do you want to jump through fire, swim through mud, and climb rope walls? You get all this and more with these adventure races. The best part , a nice cold beer awaits at the finish line! Completing a Tough Mudder is definitely on my fitness bucket list for 2012!
Tough Mudder 2012 PA Schedule:
- Tough Mudder Pennsylvania(Pocono Manor): April 28-29 or May 12-13
Warrior Dash 2012 PA Schedule:
- Warrior Dash Pennsylvania(Pocono Raceway): June 16th
3. Try a new fitness class
Is your workout feeling stale? Do you need a change? It may be a good time to look into fitness classes on offer at your facility. The body likes change. Don't be afraid to try a new yoga or body sculpting class. Do something outside your normal routine. It can be fun and challenge you in a new way. The local YMCA's offer decent group fitness options, some of the classes being free to members!
4. Invest in a personal trainer
Hiring a personal trainer can give you the edge you need to reach your goals. Trainers use scientifically sound training and can give you the extra motivation you need. You'll definitely get a more challenging, more beneficial workout. The key is to pick a trainer with the correct certifications and experience. Look for trainers with NSCA, ACSM, or NASM certifications. Also, trainers that have a four year degree in an exercise related field will be better prepared to help you reach your goals!
5. Take advantage of the local land
Often people forget that exercise can take place outside of the gym. Living in Pennsylvania, we have an abundance of natural playgrounds. Take advantage of these playgrounds in 2012. Take a hike or run in Caledonia State Park. Hiking the trails is a great way to burn calories and get some fresh air! The views are also spectacular. The Gifford Pinchot State Park has over 20 miles of trails to explore. Don't keep your exercise in the gym! Enjoy your surroundings.
Yours in health,
B.H.
