The first 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 auctioned for charity

The awesome new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 isnt expected to hit the streets until sometime next year but this past weekend, Barrett Jackson hosted an auction for the right to be the first person to buy a ZL1, although the auction was technically for the 69th Camaro ZL1 built – not the first one.

This auction was intended to commemorate the 1969 Camaro ZL1 which saw just 69 units built so when the 69th 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 rolls off of GM’s Oshawa assembly line it will be finished in the unique Carbon Flash Metallic exterior paint originally introduced on the 2012 Chevrolet Centennial Edition Corvette (click here for a look at the Corvette in Carbon Flash Metallic).  While the bidders this past weekend at the Barrett Jackson Auto Auction weren’t battling for the very first Camaro ZL1, the rights to own one of the rarest of the highest performance Camaros of all time came at a premium - $250,000 to be exact.

While $250,000 might seem like a tremendous amount of money for the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, it should be kept in mind that the ZL1 will likely be the best performing muscle car of all time – by any of the American automakers.  Packing the 580 horsepower supercharged LSA V8 that is also found in the Cadillac CTS-V Sedan, Coupe and Wagon and the magnetic ride control system from the Corvette ZR1, the ZL1 will most certainly be a legend the second the first one pulls out of the dealership onto the open roads.  Most importantly, the quarter million price tag applied by the bidders at Barrett Jackson won’t go to GM but instead, the YMCA of Southern Nevada so in addition to getting an amazing muscle car, the winning bidder is also helping a children’s charity.

The bad news for the winning bidder is that he or she will have to wait until the 69th 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 rolls off of the assembly line with an expected delivery date coming some time next spring – that’s a long wait for a $250,000 plaything but kudos to the buyer for ponying up that kind of money to support the YMCA.  This also shows that enthusiasm for Detroit's muscle cars are unwaivering during these times of a shaky financial time and rising gas prices - proving that no matter how expensive gas gets, Detroit muscle car buyers will still line up to get a super high performance car.
