A couple months back, there was big tussle between the fighting game community (FGC) and eSports (Electronic Sports which encompasses a wide range of games that include games such as StarCraft, Halo, Call of Duty, and League of Legends). One might argue that this whole situation got out of hand when one of the managers of Evil Geniuses, SirScoots, called the fighting game community "little" and that they'll always have their "little tournaments."
What happened next was the two sides throwing haymakers at each other while the leaders attempted to maintain order. After the dust settled, it seemed as if the FGC and eSports community both mutually agreed that they wouldn't mind working together somewhere in the future if circumstances allow for it. Long story short, the FGC doesn't want to be part of the eSports community because they are enamored with their identity and because they feel that eSports doesn't truly understand how their community works (Ex: an announcer at Dreamhack 2011 even called top players from the FGC mere "button mashers"). The eSports community, believe that gamers should be paid for their hard work and skill; that gamers should be able to make a living off doing what they love.
It all seemed hunky dory in the end... But then you look at current tournaments in the fighting game community and you see that the term and concept of "eSports" is consistently denigrated. However, if you watch StarCraft 2 tournaments and their various media, they never talk trash about the fighting game community. They talk about what they love: StarCraft 2. It's a darn shame that the fighting game community commentators don't have the same maturity level as eSports commentators. Instead, these commentators are merely butthurt that the people in eSports get paid fairly well for doing what they love. Let's be honest, most people who are haters are hating because they are nowhere near as successful as the people they're hating.
Hey fighting game community, I'm calling you out. Stop being whiny, little haters. You should concentrate on talking about the games you love and about how great they are. You're wasting your breath hating on people who love games that are different from yours. This is just like different religions hating on each other. In the end, we're all gamers; we play games because we love them. There's really no need for us to be drinking that Hatorade. This is a shoutout to the commentators in the StarCraft 2 community: thank you guys for actually casting your games and not wasting air time belittling other communities. Keep it classy.
