'The Fighting Days' celebrates women’s suffrage movement in Manitoba

WINNIPEG – The road to voting rights for Manitoba women, the first in Canada, was not an easy one. Set in Winnipeg during 1910-1917, Wendy Lill’s "The Fighting Days" sheds light on this volatile time in history, bringing suffragists Nellie McClung, Francis Beynon and Lillian Beynon to life.

Farm girl Francis moves to the big city and lands a job at a local newspaper. After meeting Nellie, she decides to join the fight for women’s right to vote, but soon feels that moral concessions are being made by the suffragists in order to serve their own agenda...

"The Fighting Days" runs February 9-March 3, 2012 at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. Cast members include Richard Clarkin ("Mating Dance of the Werewolf") as McNair, Sarah Constible ("The 39 Steps") as Francis, Daria Puttaert ("Top Girls") as Lily, and Marina Stephenson Kerr ("Pride and Prejudice") as Nellie.

The production is directed by Robb Paterson ("White Christmas") and features the work of Set and Costume Designer Brian Perchaluk; Lighting Designer Larry Isacoff; Sound Designer Michael Wright; Assistant Director Jennifer Lyon; Stage Manager Margaret Brook; Assistant Stage Manager Candace Maxwell; and Apprentice Stage Manager Lisa Nelson.
