BANGOR-- The Kiwanis National/North Regina/Broncos L.L., from Regina, Saskatchewan defeated Whalley L.L., from Surrey, British Columbia 6-5 on Thursday night to win the Canada regional and complete the field for the 2014 Senior League World Series.

The team from Saskatchewan will play the host team from Bangor, Maine in the first game of the world series at 12 p.m. on Sunday at Mansfield Stadium.

This is the ninth time in the 13 years the series has been played at Mansfield stadium that Bangor East.West L.L., has been the host team.Bangor reached the championship game in 2010, falling to Aruba South L.L., San Nicolas, Aruba 8-1.

The team from Bangor could be playing shorthanded when they take the field for the first game of the tournament. The Bangor Comrades American Legion team is currently playing in the northeast regional. Six players on the 16 player Senior League roster is with the legion team. The Comrades defeated Cheshire, Connecticut 7-1 on Thursday in their first game of the double elimination tournament.

Western L.L., from Grand Rapids, Michigan will be making their second trip in three years to Bangor. Western defeated Wabash L.L., Wabash, Indiana 8-1 to win the U.S. Central regional.

Western will take on Pariba L.L., Willemstad, Curacao, Netherlands Antilles at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. It is the first trip to the World Series for Pariba, who defeated Las Tablas L.L., Los Santos, Panama 2-1 on July 19th to capture the Latin America Title.

A team from Connecticut will be representing the East region for the first time since the series has been in Bangor. That team is Edgewood L.L., from Bristol.

Edgewood will take on West University L.L., Houston, Texas at 5 p.m. on Sunday. This will be the fourth appearance in the world series for West University. They won the world title in 2009.

Dumfries District L.L., Dumfries, Virginia defeated Martinez-Evans L.L., Martinez, Georgia 16-6 on Wednesday to win the Southeast regional.

Dumfries will take on Central East Maui L.L., from Wailuku, Hawaii in the final game of day one of pool play. Maui defeated Manhattan Beach L.L., Manhattan Beach, California 12-4 in the U.S. West regional championship game.

Saipan Little League, Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and Emilia L.L., Emilia, Italy round out the 10 teams that will be playing in the Senior League World Series.

Saipan will play on Monday at 5 p.m. against the host team. Emilia will play Bristol, Connecticut at 10 a.m. on Monday. Click here for the full schedule.

The week will start with the opening ceremonies on Saturday, August 9th. The ceremonies are free to the public and include a concert from Greater Bangor area band Shine at 7 p.m., and the evening will conclude with a fireworks show.
