The Festival of New Spanish Cinema returns to AFI this week!

Washington, D.C. --- The Festival of New Spanish Cinema, organized by PRAGDA, AFI and SPAIN arts & culture (Cultural program of the Embassy of Spain) starts this week in Silver Spring, Maryland featuring seven hits from Spain.

The Festival kicks off the North American 10-city tour at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center this Thursday, April 3 at 7:30 p.m., with the 16 Goya-nominated film Unit 7. Alberto Rodriguez, Spanish director and filmmaker, is expected to attend. A reception hosted by SPAIN arts & culture is scheduled to follow the screening of Unit 7 on opening night.

Now in its sixth year, this is North America’s leading showcase of Spanish cinema which comes to the nation’s capital, allowing audiences to discover and fall in love with the latest and most exciting films from Spain.

“We have hand-picked the best films Spain has to offer,” says Marta Sanchez, founder of PRAGDA and the festival’s primary organizer. “From our favorite directors such as Cesc Gay and Gracias Querejeta, to impressive indie feature by avant garde directors Elias Leon Siminiani and Juan Cavestany, these films are not to be missed.”

Of special note, Sanchez says, is the premiere of the fast-speed thriller UNIT 7 by Rodriguez, which received 16 nominations to Goya Awards (Spanish Academy Awards). “You will see the best performers working in Spain today,” Sanchez adds, “including Maribel Verdu, Luis Tosar, Eduard Fernandez, Candela Peña, Javier Cámara, Ricardo Darin, and Ernesto Alterio. We have an array of genres from surreally-Buñuelinean stories to thrillers, romantic comedies and social change features.”

This year’s festival consists of these seven films from Spain:

  1. The award-winning comedy about men that will delight women, A GUN IN EACH HAND, (Una pistola en cada mano, by Cesc Gay)
  2. The debut film MAP (Mapa, by Elias Leon Siminiani)
  3. The thriller UNIT 7 (Grupo 7, by Alberto Rodríguez), nominated for 16 Goya Awards
  4. The surprising and hilarious portrayal of Spanish current affairs, comedy of the year PEOPLE IN PLACES (Gente en Sitios, by Juan Cavestany)
  5. The Oscar selection to represent Spain FIFTEEN YEARS AND 1 DAY (15 años y un dia, by Gracia Querejeta)
  6. The controversial eye-opener OPERATION E (Operacion E, by Miguel Courtois Paternina)
  7. The documentary for all food lovers, PERU SABE. CUISINE AS AN AGENT OF SOCIAL CHANGE (Peru Sabe. La cocina, arma social by Jesús M. Santos)
