The Farmer in All of Us, a photographic poem

It’s not a truck or trailer review, once in a while I get to review books I enjoy. When I saw the Ram “Farmer” commercial on last year’s Super Bowl, I thought what genius to go after the truck buyers that are making money at the end of the recession, farmers and ranchers. It wasn’t called “So God made a politician” or “ So God made a stock broker.” Of course Paul Harvey’s famous speech was called “So God Made a Farmer.” A great speech that millions of Americans were treated to again in the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl XLVII. I almost forgot how much I miss listening to Paul Harvey on the radio.

2013 is the year of the Ram truck, with their brand selling in record numbers, introducing a diesel into ½ ton trucks, air suspensions, 30,000 lb. trailer capacity in a one ton and more. So Rams new book along with National Geographic, titled “The Farmer in All of Us” seems appropriate.

The book is big, in the coffee table category, over 300 pages. But it’s an easy read with mostly pictures, big pictures, taken by the world class photographers from National Geographic.

Seven chapters, all farmers and ranchers will enjoy the book. I think we should all send one to our city cousins, to see pictures of big calloused hands, farmer tans and sun weathered wrinkled faces that hard working farmers achieve. The pictures from the original Super Bowl spot are in the book along with pictures National Geographic took scouring the country on farms and ranches.

Something for everyone, dry land farms, irrigation, truck farms, orange groves, horse farms, almond orchards, hay fields, sugarcane, cattle ranches and my favorite, barns. Photos from planes and up close, it is art.

Paul Harvey gave the “So God Made a Farmer” speech to a room full of future farmers. I still call FFA the Future Farmers of America as it was know when I was a member in high school. Only fitting that proceeds from the book help buy blue coats for FFA members that can’t afford them. As with the Super Bowl Ram truck commercial last year, linking to the Ram website raised a million dollars for the FFA scholarship fund.

I was on the farm my first 32 years, now I’m on a few acres outside of a Front Range city surrounded by onion fields and cabbage. I’m a couple miles from a Wal-Mart, Starbucks, Subway, McDonalds and a new hospital. Which is nice, but I miss being farther out on the plains, disking the soil over in the spring and smelling the dirt. Rain had a different meaning. I’d take a chair out to the porch and put my legs up on the door trim and watch the rain like it was Duck Dynasty.

We have some chickens, rabbits, horses and a goat. So I can still show the grand kids where food comes from when they gather eggs. Maybe one of them will become a farmer. I better start saving for a $300,000 combine.

You can buy the book at for $45.
