Gangster film fans will be thrilled to see one of the genres most popular actors return on September 13th in the dark comedy gangster film, The Family. The film also known as Malavita, is a French film written by Luc Besson (Taken), Michael Caleo and co written by Tonino Benacquista with Luc Besson as the director. Martin Scorsese has his name attached to the film as executive producer. The film is being distributed by EuropaCorp and Relativity Media.
The comedy follows the story of a Brooklyn family that is relocated to a town in France under the Witness Protection Program. After breaking the mob’s code of Omerta, a deadly sin in the Mafia, the Manzoni’s are given a name change to Blake while Agent Stansfield tries his best to keep the unorthodox family in line. The all star cast includes Robert DeNiro as Fred Blake/Giovanni Manzoni , Michelle Pfeiffer as wife Maggie, Dianna Agron as the daughter Belle, and their son Warren portrayed by John D'Leo with Tommy Lee Jones as CIA Agent Stansfield. The Blake’s are not your typical American family. The son is following in his father’s footsteps and gets into all kinds of trouble at school while his sister is as tough as her mobster dad and a mom that knows her way around a fire. When problems arise, the Blake family resort to their old ways of solving problems. Mafia guys from the old neighborhood are on the hunt to track the family down while Agent Stansfield has the arduous task of keeping the family alive. Some familiar faces from the Sopranos such as Dominic Chianese and Vincent Pastore also appear in The Family. If the Sopranos seemed like an atypical family, just wait to you see the Blake family in action.
While the film has many comedic elements, there is enough violence to satisfy any gangster film fan. Explosions, fires, gun fights and gratuitous violence fill the screen throughout the film The Family. The film is called Malavita in Europe while in the United States it is called The Family.
Most of the filming and production took place in Normandy France, Paris France, L’Aigle and New York City. The film also holds the distinction of being one of the first films ever shot in the film studio Cite du Cinema in Saint-Denis in France. The film studio Cite du Cinema founded by Luc Besson is the largest ever built in Saint-Denis.
DeNiro seems to do well in comedy gangster films, as his Analyze This franchise was successful and received favorable reviews. The Family looks like it will be a hit as it possesses all the elements of a great gangster film. With names like Scorsese and DeNiro attached, how can you go wrong?
