Anchorageites are once again making the journey up to the valley to attend the Fair.The Alaska State Fair began in 1936 and the events of that year included the crowning of the Fair queen, boxing matches, horse races, dances, a rodeo, a baby show, and baseball games. In 1939 attendance was 1600 people and in 2008 the figure reached 295,530 and showcased 7,950 exhibit entries and 475 vendors (source: http://www.alaskastatefair.org).
The Fair continues through this Labor Day Weekend and there are several opportunities to catch shows.
Fair admission is $10 for an adult on a weekday and $12 for the weekend (kids under 5 are free) and will allow you to access some of the shows.
One such show is Beatlemania, a Los Angeles based Beatles tribute band whose songs range from early hits like “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” to later psychedelic hits such as “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” Beatlemania performs Thursday September 3rd, 7:30pm at the Borealis Theatre.
Friday night brings hard rockers Seether to town with opening act and local favorite Static Cycle. The show starts with Static Cycle at 7pm and Seether following.
Saturday the 5th brings Tennessee native and country star Rodney Atkins at 7:30pm at the Borealis Theatre.
Sunday Creedence Clearwater Revisited with two original Creedence Clearwater Revival members take the stage at 7pm at the Borealis Theatre.
Before the shows you may be able to catch the Kenai Racing Pigs or the GCI petting zoo or stop and have a glass of wine at the Alaska State Fair Art House. There are many more things to see and activities to participate in for all those who live in Anchorage.
