Many kids like riddles. Parents even supply their children with riddle books to expand their thinking skills. However, if you’ve been wondering why your friends on Facebook are turning into giraffes and don’t know why, take heart. Or maybe, it should read, don’t put your neck on the line. Here’s help.
The whole thing started with a riddle that a friend posts on his or her status. The riddle goes like this:
3:00 am, the doorbell rings and you wake up. Unexpected visitors. It's your parents and they are there for breakfast. You have strawberry jam, honey, wine, bread and cheese. What is the first thing you open?
As you can see, if you get the riddle wrong, your profile picture turns into a giraffe for three days. If you get the riddle right, you get to keep your smiling human face.
So, what is the answer? If you like riddles, and you want to play along, don’t look because the answer will be displayed on the bottom of this article.
Read the riddle closely. As riddles go, you have to assume there is a hidden agenda or something you have missed. Like a trained magician, it is not magic but merely slide of hand. Divert the attention elsewhere, and your magic trick is a success. The same is true with riddles.
In this case, the attention is diverted to make the reader think about which food item he or she will be opening to serve the parents. The deeper clue rests in what the person in the riddle was doing before the doorbell rang.
The person was sleeping.
Unless you sleep with your eyes open, there’s your clue. You must first open your eyes. It’s the first thing you open.
Some versions of this riddle say that another acceptable answer would be “door”. Others play a deeper trick on the answerer and say that door is incorrect. Depending on how tricky your friends are, you could get it right by answering either:
Eyes or Door
To be on the safe side, however, you might want to answer, “eyes”.
